Living with Off-Grid Solar Power   |
N7ZN I am a licensed Amateur Radio operator, holding the callsign N7ZN. My shack is rather modest, as the photo illustrates. Located adjacent to my power system, the Kenwood TS-850S/AT transceiver operates directly off my 2,000 Amp-hour battery pack. As my home is off-grid, I am always operating on 'emergency power'. My antennas are similarly modest. Most of my operating is with a Butternut HF-6V multi-band vertical. With 63 ground radials, each 52 feet long, this antenna operates much better than I had expected. This is especially true on 40, 30 and 20 meters. I also have installed an Extended Double Zepp (EDZ) cut for 20 meters. This antenna is approximately 45 feet above ground, and works well not just on 20 meters, but also on 15 and 10 meters. The vast majority of my operating is using CW. I enjoy ragchewing, contesting and DXing. In USA-centric contests, I do my best to hand out as many Idaho (ID) mults as possible. In DX contests, I work on my band-country totals. I have earned the ARRL DXCC CW award, and presently have 201 countries confirmed (197 credited by the ARRL). All this with a barefoot transceiver and marginal antennas. Of course, working exclusively CW does help. |
